The wild geese have announced the waning light as the days become shorter and the wheel of the year turns toward winter once more. In the height of July heat, I am both enthralled with the beauty of summer, whilst aware of her fleeting glow. In my journey to better understand the cycle of seasons, the one aspect I struggle to reconcile is that time refuses to stand still. I am finding that learning the ancient ways to celebrate each station on the wheel of the year helps quell the pain of wanting the impossible.

At present we find ourselves between Summer Solstice (Litha) and Lughnasadh (Lammas). I shared reflections on Litha in my essay Solstice Journeys and now I turn my curiosity toward Lughnasadh (loo-nah-sah). Celebrated on the eve of August, this ancient Celtic fire festival honors the deities of the sun and the first harvest of grain. Baking bread and gathering particular herbs are practices believed to welcome gifts of love, romance, protection, and safe childbirth. Fire jumping is also a spritely sport of this festival!

Dear Dreamers,

For those in the Northern Hemisphere, we have made it to the point on the wheel of the year when the sun is at its most radiant. Known as Midsummer, Litha or simply, summer solstice, it is a time for both revelry and reflection as the sky is bright late into the night, but the glow wanes with each new day. I’m bursting with all the anticipation of cresting the top of a giant Skywheel, while simultaneously aware of the quiet whispers of another winter on the horizon.

Last Sunday, I led a Dream in Watercolor workshop at the Scout Wine Bar where I have a series of original paintings on display through July. While the structure of each Dream in Watercolor session remains relatively the same (watercolor skill → Shamanic Journey Meditation → creative channeling practice), the theme is new every time and this month’s theme is - you guessed it - the solstice. For this session, I was joined by a solid crew of courageous adventurers who chose to accept the mission of tapping into the wisdom of the sun. We each received powerfully personal messages and were visited by helping spirits of all kinds (sturgeons, horses, elephants, younger-past-higher-selves and others). We shared smiles, laughter, fears and tears in recounting our harrowing meditation experiences.

In my meditation, I was honored by the presence of a phoenix who delivered the message, “We are all expressions of the sun.” This was followed by a vision in which I saw each person in the workshop with an energy channel that curled, looped and connected from their crown chakra all the way up to the sun (see illustration above). I understood this to mean that as humans our bodies are of the earth, our souls are of the sun and we all have the purpose of shining our unique radiance upon the world.

If we find our light has gone dim, we need only remember our true nature and tap back into the source energy that gives us life. This act of “remembering” can sometimes be impeded by factors beyond our control. The traumas we endure as beings having human experiences can lead to soul loss. It can be a tall task to reclaim our sovereign power, but as I was reminded in my solstice journey, it is always accessible to us. Even in the dark of winter and the dead of night, the sun is always shining somewhere.

I will lead one more solstice themed workshop this coming Sunday at the Fly Awake Teahouse. I can’t hardly wait to see what new revelations await me and my workshop companions! If you are in the Portland area, I would be so honored to have you join me!

I am thrilled to be co-facilitating a Shamanic Journey Meditation Intensive with Sara Violante this Sunday, May 18th in Portland, OR. I use this style of meditation to channel my artwork and find it regularly blows my mind by providing the wisdom I need to navigate life.

For instance, when I was designing the poster for this workshop, I did a Journey Meditation and had a vision of a drum with a compass on it (see below). The next weekend, I went on a whim to see the Yaquina Head Lighthouse on the Oregon Coast and was ASTOUNDED to find the same compass from my vision on the pavement in front of the lighthouse (see above)! It was a very windy day at the ocean, but when I stood on that compass, the balance of the universe felt restored.

I’m so glad I have Journey Meditation in my life, especially right now and I look forward to sharing it with our community this weekend! As an artist, my imagery comes from visions I see in this world, as well as in dimensions outside normal reality. As humans, we have a natural ability to access alternate realities and we are SO good at it, we can do it lying down. We do it every single night when we dream. With practice we can also access it when we are awake. What we see and sense in the otherworld can have profound personal meaning. We can manifest that meaning into our waking lives by literally painting our dreams. This is the philosophy behind my workshop Dream in Watercolor, which although it involves creative materials, is WAY more than an art class. It’s a spiritual journey that has the potential to change your life.

In the past year since my first Dream in Watercolor workshop, I’ve developed a strong connection to the other realm that has not only influenced me, but also my family and entire circle of friends. Every day I am creating a life that is more grounded, present and accepting of unconditional love.

In this workshop, I guide students through my process of tapping into the unseen realms using Shamanic Journey Meditation and watercolor paint. You don’t have to consider yourself an artist to thrive in this experience. Perhaps you are a writer, looking to spark new ideas, a parent wanting some protected time for your own inner-child, or a therapist interested in learning a new self-discovery tool to bring to your sessions. This may be just the thing to unleash your creative spirit in a profound way. The focus here is the process, not the product. It’s about letting go, connecting with your intuition and engaging in art making as a form of trance (like automatic writing, but with paint). No experience is necessary, all materials are provided and a carefully selected tea is served for inspiring creativity.

You will also learn the meditation technique of Shamanic Journeying - or as I like to call it, Adventure Meditation. Instead of clearing the mind, the goal is to conquer a mission - should you choose to accept it. For example, “I’d like to gain clarity around a challenge I am facing in a particular area of my life.” Through the combination of our own natural abilities and the assistance of Helping Spirits from the unseen realm, profound revelations become a common occurrence.

Okay, that sounds neat, but what are Helping Spirits? This is a term used to describe in a very basic sense, positive energy and it can come in many forms. One of the most significant being your higher-self. The YOU that has only your best interest in mind. The version of yourself that wants to see you absolutely crushing it here on Earth. Your higher-self is the person you wish you were, while on the path to realizing it’s who you already are.

Helping Spirits can also appear in the form of ancestors, angels, elements, mythological beings, gods, goddesses, animals, places and ancient figures. You might already have relationships with Helping Spirits or perhaps you will feel called to nurture a new connection. Once acquainted with your helping spirit crew, you’ll learn that they are always there for you ready to offer support through the ups and downs of life. Super casual.

With the spiritual aspect along with the intuitive wisdom that emerges, Dream in Watercolor transcends a simple painting class and becomes a personal empowerment experience. Returning students say it has helped them create a life that is more grounded, connected and loving. Some students say that they look forward to class every month for some scheduled self-care, a boost of confidence and connection. It is an honor to witness the transformative effects this workshop has had on both myself and my community.

I love Dream in Watercolor with Erin. It’s one of the highlights of my month and I try to go every time. Erin’s presentation is professional, informative and very knowledgeable. Dream in Watercolor has become such an integral part of the lives of participants, I have expanded it so that I am holding one session each month. The framework of each workshop is relatively the same, but every experience includes a new painting skill and theme, which center on elements, nature, the changing seasons or the wheel of the year. We also deep dive into different Shamanic concepts and aspects of the spirit world. Past themes have included Shamanic Art, Tree Spirits, Dream Worlds, Solstice, Samhain and the Equinox. Each workshop is such a unique experience that students return again and again to deepen their creative channeling practices.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

• In this deep exploration of painting imagery from the unseen realm, we begin by building a container that is grounded and supportive. We pull tarot cards and introduce ourselves, sharing a bit about what is present for us in the moment. Tea is served and we settle in for our creative channeling journey.

• From this foundation, we open our hearts and invite playfulness with a lesson in essential painting tools and skills. We learn that working with watercolor can be meditative, freeing and fun. With this medium as our collaborator, we surprise ourselves with our natural artistic gifts.

• Next, we step through the portal into the unseen realm through Shamanic Journey Meditation. You are invited to leave your chair and find a comfortable and cozy spot in the room. I provide an introduction and we set an intention.

• Following the meditation, we launch into an immersive creative flow, using the skills we have learned and the imagery we extracted from the meditation to manifest our visions into being. You are invited to begin by writing, drawing or jumping right back into painting. We also have the opportunity to share our meditative experiences with the group.

• Finally, we bring our journey to a close. On completion of this workshop, you will have created your own channeled artwork, have a sense of confidence in yourself and ability to replicate this creative practice whenever you desire, and receive additional resources for continued exploration.

Dear Dreamers,

As you may know, I’ve set an intention to more closely synchronize my creative business and life with the Wheel of the Year - the cycle of seasons and their mid-points. I still very much consider myself a student on this journey, for although I have had a close relationship with nature since I was little, it wasn’t until more recently I felt a desire to lock step with her natural cycles. I’m kinda surprised it took me this long, but as Fiona Apple and Blake Mills have said, “All in good time!” In March we took a look at Ostara and the Gifts of Spring. Now, with flowers bursting everywhere the Wheel of the Year turns to Beltane, which translated from Gaelic, Lá Bealtaine, means bright fire.

Beginning in the evening of April 30th and stretching into the wee morning hours of May 1st (aka May Day), this is a time when the veil between worlds is at its most thin. Sound similar to the October celebration of Samhain? It is! In Welsh tradition Beltane, Samhain and Midsummer are believed to be the 3 spirit nights. Ideal times to connect with and seek guidance from our ancestors, helping spirits and on Beltane - the fae.

Fire jumping, dancing around a Maypole and making flower crowns are a few of the more iconic and symbolic Beltane traditions. They represent rebirth, unification of the masculine and feminine energies and just plain blissing out on the beauty of springtime. It is also a time for planting and fertilizing seeds, both literally and figuratively. Whether it’s sowing the beginnings of plants, practices or ideas, this is a time to celebrate renewal, call on the support of nurturing energies from the unseen world and envision a prosperous future and abundant harvest come Autumn.

At Dream in Watercolor this Sunday, April 27th in Portland, OR we will capture the beauty of Beltane by making vibrant watercolor blooms. This magical painting technique happens when the paintbrush is plump with pigment and the paper is slick with water. When the two connect, the paint rushes down the silky brush fibers and onto the paper in an explosion of color.

For the meditation portion of our workshop, we will tap into the energy of the earth as well as helping spirits with known Beltane connections. The mythological nature spirit, Green Man is said to be reborn each year at Beltane. Also goddesses Venus, Aphrodite, Freya and Lilith have a relationship with this time of fertility and abundance. In Gaelic mythology, Tuatha Dé Danann, or the magical people, are said to walk the earth at Beltane. These would all be interesting energies to tap into for inspiration and guidance during this blissful time of year.

Dream in Watercolor: Beltane Session

Have you ever felt the call of a tree? A rock? An animal? A place? Several years ago, I felt the call of a Sequoia. She folded me into the ridges of her bark and absorbed my tears on many occasions. She sent messages for me through her root systems to the universe. What messages would you ask her to send? This Saturday, whisper them with me at the Sequoia Spirit meditation - details below.

You called me down from the window of my bricked building,

From the park across the street.

You held me squished into your squishy bark.

Your squish is your strength, protecting you from wildfire.

Your squish is wildfire colored, strong as this brick building.

Later, I moved from that tiny apartment,

to a cottage 70 blocks east as the crow flies.

By then, your location had become a pin marked with a heart on my map, 

because of how often I visited you.

My heart with a hole because I couldn’t carefully unearth your roots 

and take you along as they have done in Japan.

You must have sent word ahead,

because the elders here already knew my name.

They called me down from the path along the bluff.

They asked me to bring the others,

and I did.

As we welcome Ostara and the Spring Equinox, I am reflecting on what an honor it was to offer Dream in Watercolor in my Pennsylvania hometown. Here is a description of how the workshop landed for one attendee:

The thing I hear most often from attendees before this workshop is that they don’t consider themselves creative or they are really nervous about the painting part. The thing I hear most often from attendees after the workshop is that they not only had fun, but surprised themselves by making deeply meaningful artwork that they will cherish forever.

The truth is - this is an empowerment experience masquerading as an art class. It is about engaging with creativity as a form of trance work. It’s about unearthing profound insights, connecting to your personal sense of spirituality and creating something that has meaning for you and you alone. And I assure you, there is zero pressure to make apples look like apples. It is my intention that you will have fun, feel empowered and perhaps even surprise yourself with how creative you truly are!

As my Pennsylvania travels come to a close, I am honoring the balance of the light and the dark as it manifested in my experiences of visiting with loved ones and the land that raised me. I grew up surrounded by the gentle rolling hills of rural Pennsylvania. Though Oregon is my home nowadays, I try to make it back to the beautiful Susquehanna valley for a visit every couple of years. The farm lands surrounding my childhood home became the setting for my painting, Dream Farm II. With Ostara and the celebration of spring on the horizon, I thought it would be fun to share a few Easter Eggs hidden in the piece.

I took photos on a walk around my family home and used them as references. If you look closely at the trees in the painting, you will notice their branches are bare, but dotted with empty bird nests. With my youngest brother on the precipice of finishing college, my parents’ home will soon be an empty nest as well.

The barn and blue bus may not appear to have much in common, but they have contained the collective passion of music that is at the heart of my family. The barn houses a rehearsal studio where my dad’s band, Outrage practices regularly. My sister and I purchased the blue bus and converted it into a tour vehicle, that carried us up and down the east coast as we performed in our band, Key of V. It broke down multiple times and no longer runs, but is living out its final days as a spare bedroom when the entire family (7 siblings + significant others) comes home for a visit at the same time.

My childhood home is an old Pennsylvania farmhouse that is most definitely haunted, but by friendly ghosts. It is quaint and cozy, especially on cold winter days. It has a large yard that is lovely in the springtime. The hill that the farm is on was once only occupied by the yellow farmhouse (in the left hand side of the painting) and our house, but as the years went by the land was parceled and sold. It is now a sweet little community at the top of a road called Blooming Grove.

Dream Farm II contains multitudes and it is one of my personal favorite pieces and one of the most highly collected by my audience. It would take chapters to share the entire sacred meaning behind the piece, but for now I will leave you with one more detail. The figures in the piece are perhaps the most significant symbols as they represent the souls of those who have called this land home for centuries. Both my own ancestors and those lineage holders that were stewards of the land before. They represent helping spirits and apparitions of divine caretakers who will look after the land once we are gone. I myself intend to maintain my cadence of bi-yearly visits and continue to look in on it - even in spirit.

Save Your Seat

WHAT TO BRING
Following the meditation, we will take time to process our experiences by journaling or creating artwork. This will look a little different than the in-person Dream in Watercolor workshop, where normally I would supply your art materials. For Sequoia Spirit please BYOA (bring your own art) supplies for writing, drawing or painting if you wish. There will also be an invitation to share insights and reflections with the group.

We will be outdoors and connecting with the natural world whether rain or shine. Sequoias offer excellent shelter, but also bring a rain jacket and dress in layers to keep warm.

We will sit on bare earth with a light dusting of twigs and pine needles. Feel free to bring a folding chair, blanket or pillow for your comfort.

BODY STUFF
Bring a water bottle and/or snacks if you desire. There are NOT restrooms near our gathering place. Consider stopping ahead of time at Fresh Love Cafe (where you can also grab food & drink), or at the tennis courts at Rose City Park. Both locations are a 15 minute walk or 3 minute drive from our gathering place.

We will gather beneath a Sequoia tree at the entrance to the Rose City Bluff nature trail, next to the Roseway Golf Course in Northeast Portland. Click HERE for a pin to the parking area on google maps. I will include helpful location photos in an email leading up to our session.

How do we build a collective dream?

It’s inauguration day. I tend to steer my dispatches around political pigeonholes, but I would be remiss to gloss over the magnitude of this shift in our reality. More than ever before, I find myself questioning the validity of everything. What is real? What is an illusion?

Shamans believe that the “present” is actually the dream, shaped by our collective consciousness and our dreamworlds are the true reality. They go further to posit that we have the power to shape the landscape of the collective dream, and by raising our consciousness, can do so with great efficacy. 

This may sound “woo”, but let me ask you this - do believe in the power of prayer or manifestation? If so, then you already know how to access an innate ability to shape the collective dream. 

This Sunday we will explore how to supercharge this power at Dream in Watercolor: Dream Worlds and I would love for you to join me!
